What is Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is the science and art of improving your smile. A great looking smile can be your most powerful asset, opening up many doors and possibly changing your life.
Our Cosmetic Dentist team in Parkstone, Poole, a short drive from Bournemouth, is caring and compassionate. You will find your cosmetic transformation to be unbelievably fast and often requires just two visits, although dental implants require a number of visits (up to six months). The newest techniques, combined with talent and the abundant experience of our team, will ensure that your treatment is painless and most of all done right for you!
Let us show you what we can do to make your smile the best that it can be.
Tooth Whitening, What is it?
Like hair and skin, teeth vary in colour. Some teeth are yellower and darker than others, even when they are quite healthy. Teeth tend to get darker as people get older.
What will my dentist do?
There are two ways of whitening your teeth. One takes place at home and the other in the dentist’s surgery.
Home whitening works like this:
The dentist will give you weak whitening gel to use at home, in a tray which fits closely round your teeth. The tray makes sure that the gel does not sting your gums. You will need to put the tray in your mouth for a few hours on several occasions, as instructed by your dentist (probably over a period of weeks).
The dentist will need to make moulds of your mouth (called impressions), so that a whitening tray can be constructed. At your next appointment, your dentist will check that the tray fits and show you how to put the gel in the tray at home.
Whitening in the surgery works like this:
Your dentist will use a stronger whitening gel than is used for home whitening. Dentists use this method to whiten all the teeth at the same time in either your upper or lower jaw.
The dentist will protect your gums. They will paint the whitening gel onto the teeth and either shine a special light at them or just leave the whitening gel on the teeth for some time. The whitening gel is then washed off with water.
Your dentist will make a note of your tooth colour using model teeth in different shades before they treat you. Look at the colour match yourself before the treatment, so you can compare it with the colour after whitening. Your teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold food and drink for a few days after whitening.
Zoom Power whitening
A safe, non-invasive and pain-free tooth whitening procedure which is performed at the practice in just over an hour. Power whitening is ideal for those patients who simply want to lighten their teeth and be confident to smile! Many people undergo power whitening before big occasions (like their wedding day!) when they want to look their best!
This modern cosmetic dental treatment is an in-surgery procedure, which means that your teeth are whitened while you relax in the dental chair, watch a film or even take a nap, and in just over an hour, leave the practice with a whiter, brighter smile!
What are the benefits?
- Whitening improves the appearance of your teeth without removing any of the natural tooth surface.
- Whitening changes the colour of your teeth, not the shape, so it can frequently be an excellent adjunct to veneers or dental crowns.
Smile Design
Think cosmetic dentistry and immediately you summon up pictures of those Hollywood A-list celebrities with their amazing smiles and immaculate teeth. There is so much more to it than pure aesthetics. Not having the confidence to laugh, smile, even talk openly because of the varying dental imperfections, crooked or broken, stained or irregular sized teeth, for example, can blight people’s lives. After all, our mouth is our most expressive facial feature but it’s difficult to show your emotions if you are acutely self-conscious about how you look.
‘Smile Design’
Advanced techniques such as Veneers and Lasering do have the power to improve your self-assurance, self-esteem and overall outlook on life. That’s why we believe they should be accessible to anyone wanting to enjoy a new freedom of expression. To that end we’ve pioneered a new concept that’s available at The Parkstone Dental Practice.
What we do
At the heart of our offering is the smile makeover or smile design, achieved through the use of porcelain veneers that are placed over your own teeth to give you your chosen look. It’s your look, that is personally unique to you. The beauty of veneers is that they can be styled, shaped and coloured to best match key characteristics such as hair and skin colouring, facial length, mouth width, bite, tooth size, shape and spacing‚ hence the use of the term ‘smile design’.
Smile makeovers can take as little as two weeks and are invariably painless, as the custom-made shells are simply affixed over your front teeth. Lesser procedures that can still bring considerable benefits include gum lasering, where low gum lines can be lasered back to reveal a more attractive ‘toothy’ rather than ‘gummy’ smile; and tooth whitening, a popular treatment accomplished in one surgery visit that can restore an appealing natural whiteness and go a long way to repairing the ravages of time!
